    Here is the summary of our regular practice on 9/28.

    [Chinese team]
    Topic: Shanghai Metro Crash accident
    We watched a TV report http://v.ifeng.com/v/dtzw/index.shtml#afe29f88-c62b-4312-bbb8-1d51f108f19d about the Shanghai Metro Crash accident on this Tuesday, which is a hot topic in China. We tried to repeat what the report said. It seems not easy because the presenter speaks very quickly using formal expressions. We discussed the safety of Chinese transit rail systems compared with Korean Metro and NYC Metro as well.

    追尾(zhuī wěi) rear-end
    相关部门(xiāng guān bù mén) related departments (相关~~ is very commonly used, as 相关人员 related personnel)
    第一时间(dì yī shí jiān) immediately; the first thing to do
    采取措施(cǎi qǔ cuò shī) take measures (can take it as a set phrase)
    救治伤员(jiù zhì shāng yuán) rescue and treat the injuries

    慌乱(huāng luàn) flustered
    镇静(zhèn jìng) calm down
    官腔(guān qiāng) a bureaucratic tone; an official jargon
    动车(dòng chē) high-speed train, bullet train (normal railway)
    高铁(gāo tiě) high-speed rail / train (special railway, faster than 动车)

    Topic: Japanese food
    we listened to an interview of a famous Japanese chef who runs a restaurant in Sydney, Australia. We learned Japanese-specific food names and special vocabularies related to restaurant owners:

    納豆 (なっとう) fermented stinky soy beans

    Topic: Capital Punishment
    We had a debate on the abolition of death penalty, discussed about the reasons why this system should be abolished, talked about the situation in the United States, China, and Korea an so on.
